This is one of a series of caches designed to introduce you to the Fanad Peninsula which is situated between Mulroy Bay and Lough Swilly in Co. Donegal. Whatever your interests there is plenty to enjoy - magnificent scenery and beaches, walking, fishing, golfing and bird watching to name but a few. There are also plenty of places to eat, drink and enjoy the local 'craic'!
Kindrum Lough.
Parking is available near to the posted coordinates, which are on the shores of Kindrum Lake. The Celtic Cross, which was erected in 1960, is a monument in memory of three Fanad martyrs who "ended the tyranny of landlordism". On 3rd April 1878 the local men were involved in the killing of William Sydney Clements, the 3rd Earl of Leitrim, along with his clerk and driver. Leitrim was a landlord notorious in Irish history for his mistreatment of his tenants. Born in Dublin in 1806, he was educated at Sandhurst and was commissioned in the 43rd Foot. His overbearing behaviour as a landlord brought him much hatred from his tenants, both Catholic and Protestant alike, whom he evicted with equal enthusiasm. Leitrim was deeply opposed to Gladstone's Irish Land Act of 1870 and was one of eight peers to protest against the legislation when it reached the House of Lords.
The assassins, Nial Shiels of Doughmore, an itinerant tailor, Michael Hergarty of Tullyconnell, and Michael MvElwee of Ballyworiskey, were from the Fanad Peninsula. Leitrim was buried in Dublin amid scenes of great agitation.
The cache is not on the monument and contains only a log, so please bring your own pen. It is a small green bison tube a short distance from the cross. Stealth may be required as the area is popular with anglers.
