In Memoriam Of Joseph Carl Qualtieri
Also Known As "Greenthumb" of "Greenthumb and Tweetie"

Greenthumb, born on June 18th, 1958, officially joined the Geocaching community on December 25, 2002, however Tweetie was first out in the wilds finding Tupperware in the woods with multi-billion dollar satellites on August 11, 2002. He grew up and lived most of his life on the South Hill in Spokane, attending Cooper Elementary school and graduating from Joel E. Ferris High school. He received an Applied Science - Environmental Horticulture degree at Spokane Community College, and worked at Manito Golf and Country Club as a groundskeeper for 34 years. Joe, aka Greenthumb, married Mary, aka Tweetie, on October 1, 2004, and together they enjoyed many years of geocaching, treasure hunting, volunteering and exploring the northwest.

Joe was very involved with Amateur Radio, his call sign was KE7PI, and he was the longest standing member of the Greater Spokane Emergency Management Mobile Operations Center, volunteering for over 30 years. Greenthumb could also be seen volunteering with Spokane County ARES/RACES at Bloomsday, the Lilac Parade, and many other events and disasters around the Spokane area. In his spare time he enjoyed Geocaching, treasure hunting with the Northwest Treasure Hunters Club and gardening at home.

Greenthumb and Tweetie hid their first Geocache on January 9, 2003 (GC1A4) in a park not too far from their home. They maintained this hide for fifteen years before it succumbed to the loss that sometimes happens, permanently, in this hobby we love so much. They were an active part of the area's Geocaching community, hiding 20 caches alone in the year following their enrollment. In a very maintenance-honorable fashion, out of those 20 caches hidden during 2003, 9 are still active for fellow Geocachers new and old to find. In total, the pair hid 68 well-thought-out and ultimately creative caches from 2003 to 2011.

Greenthumb, aka Joseph, was responsible for making Geocaches that blended in with their surroundings beyond the normal long before it was commonplace. Because of his background in all things gardening, he had a knack for blending anything in to a well-traveled space without a second glance. The contribution of creativity that Greenthumb and Tweetie are responsible for when it comes to piquing further hiders' imaginations ranges from containers, big and little, molded completely perfectly into rocks with almost seamless perfection to intricate birdhouses that are functional beyond being caches.

Joseph passed away in his home on June 19th, 2018, to natural causes, and he will be greatly missed.
