Geocache Description:

A Boy Named Q: Under Attack (Part 2)

Scrabbletales is a new game invented by Mogmother and Optimist on the Run on 19/11/2017

  1. Play a game of Scrabble (proper rules or not...)
  2. Record all the words used.
  3.  Use all the words in a short story.

Mogmother then wondered what to do with her stories once she’d got them... Puzzle caches, of course!

The cache is not hidden at the above co-ordinates.

Please do not drive onto, or park on, unmade or private roads. Specific parking for this section of the Severn Way is non-existant but you should be able to park in a cul de sac near the junction of Preston Street and Portland Crescent. Please show consideration for local people.  At the GZ, please replace the container carefully- the river does sometimes come up this high. Although this area is open 24/7, it may be impractical to attempt this cache in darkness, especially if the river is high or there are animals in the fields.

The cache is hidden at:

[Where ‘word’ is mentioned, this refers to words from the original Scrabble game, not extra ones added to make up the story. However, some of the names were too useful to leave out...! Ignore the possibility of Double Word Scores and Triple Letter Scores etcetera: just add up the letters.]

‘Quentin Hammurabi Mortmain, what have you been up to?’ Mrs. Mortmain emoted.

Jeremiah Grimsdyke tried to keep a straight face as the boy put down the mop.

‘Tell your Ma about the visitors.’ Mrs. Owthwaite prompted.

Hammurabi sighed. ‘Oh, a few  aquatic rogues essayed a raid.  We had secured all doors save this one; Jeremiah played butler and opened it, whereupon they surged in to ogle what tat they might seize, so we retaliated. A vial of oil was spilled, which I am clearing up.’

Mrs. Mortmain glanced around suspiciously. ‘Are you sure they’ve all gone? It niffs in here. Goat?’

‘Better than risk losing Amalthea.’ Jeremiah growled. His gaze fell upon an overlooked caltrop and he retrieved it quickly. ‘Did you come back via the yew walk? Have they damaged the garden?’

‘No, I took my bulk buy of potatoes straight to the kitchen. –Did the results of your actions merit medical attention?’

Hammurabi raised a supercilious eyebrow. ‘No doubt a bruised ego for the leader, and one received such a jab in the axis that his companions had to bear him away on a hurdle. Jeremiah wept with laughter when the first found the caltrops and leapt like a dancer… Mrs. Owthwaite, might you invent a suitable dish to celebrate our victory?’

‘Me? They say there’s a fad for potato wedges. I cut a recipe out of ‘The People’s Friend’ last week…’

‘I’ll vet it first.’ Hammurabi’s mother said grimly. ‘Leave it on the table to pend my decision…’

As the women departed, the boy looked at Jeremiah.

‘The enemy have gone, but where? The Mater did not say she had met them.’

They hurried upstairs to the Long Gallery. Hammurabi lifted down a picture and disclosed a metal plaque studded with lights. One was flashing.

‘The cart track across the ten-acre field.’ He flicked a switch and turned to the computer. After a few minutes…  ‘They’ve gone. For now. They entered by the ford, and laid track over the cattle grid. Interesting…’

‘I remember your father putting in that panel.’ Jeremiah remarked. ‘The original painting was “The Tennis Court Oath”.’

Hammurabi nodded. ‘They swore not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances required, until the constitution of the nation was established.’

‘And now you have that strange blurry black and white picture…’

‘A still from Rauschenberg’s “Open Score”. Not quite a pun, but equally relevant. The racquets have radio transmitters in them. Whenever the ball is hit, the sound roars through the armoury and a light goes out…’
