Geocache Description:

St John the Baptist, Collingham

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST, COLLINGHAM

St John the Baptist, Collingham is a Grade I listed building, achieving the status on 16 January 1967.

The building dates from C12th with alterations and additions made in C13th, C14th and C15th. It was restored in 1864 by John Henry Hakewill with a further restoration on the tower in 1886 and again in 1890.

During the restoration by Hakewill, the gallery was removed and the arches were restored, the chancel walls raised and a new timber roof installed. Other work included stuccoing the walls, restoring memorial tablets and inserting new stone dressings. The re-glazing of the windows was completed by Ward & Hughes. A new pulpit and lectern in pine and the altar rail in oak were installed. Tablets of zinc were fixed to the walls displaying the Ten Commandments. A number of new open benches of memel timber were placed in the nave to match those installed in the restoration of 1846.

The original organ was enlarged by Forster & Andrews in 1863 yet it was replaced only 20 years later in 1883 by a new instrument made by Wordsworth and Maskell.

The peal of five bells dates from 1841 and were cast by Thomas Mears.

The octagonal font has a clustered shaft stem and dates from the C17th.

The plain pews and pulpit were installed between 1907-08 with the timber screen from 1940.

St John the Baptist was originally the parish church of South Collingham before both North and South Collingham expanded and merged into one larger village.
