St. Matthews Church Waskerley
The Stockton and Darlington Railway Company built the village of Waskerley in1860 to house the workers who maintained the rolling stock to meet the needs of the mining industry, which flourished in the area.
The village sits high up on the moors on the former Waskerley Railway Line, now known as the Waskerley Way and is popular with cyclists and walkers.
At it’s height there were over 250 people living in the village which had a school, Methodist Chapel and St Matthews Church itself which was built in 1896/7.
With the decline in mining and the closure of the railway line, in the first half of the 20th Century, the residents of the village dispersed to the various nearby towns and villages and now only a handful of people live here
The character of St Matthews Church has changed little since it was built in the late 1800’s. Today, there is a permanent, albeit small exhibition, with photographs and articles about the history of the village. If the church is open, we recommend that you take a look.
