In September 2015,
the first light way rail - aka tram - in Sub-Sahara Africa opened in Addis Ababa.
At a total length of 31,6 kilometres, currently two lines run the city, roughly east to west and central to the south of the city. Trains on the north south line are blue and white, whilst on the east west line they are green and white. The fares cost 2-6 Ethiopian Birr. Tickets are bought at orange coloured kiosks next to each station.

While some may argue that the tram itself is a transport impediment - forcing cars to drive up to 4 kilometers to find a crossing, several pedestrian crossings that make a car ride along the tracks a stop-and-go - the network has been taken up well by commuters: You'll hardly see any empty carriages but rather feel quite squeezed on your trip.

This is the re-launch of the original cache that had gone missing several times. While the cache should be safer now, please be careful with traffic at the new location. If you are a 'ferenji' (western foreigner) you are bound to attract attention – either tackle the cache in a team (as 'tourists shooting photos') or go for it on an early Sunday morning when not so many people are out and about.

Note by the owner (July 2019):
After four years in Ethiopia, my time in the 'Land of Origins' came to an end in July 2019. I have done my best to widen and maintain the net of geocaches in the country, but now need to call on my fellow cachers for help: If you venture out to search for this cache, please take a replacement container with you, just in case the original is gone. - Sundowner74 |
