Tacaná volcano is the second highest peak in the series of high volcanoes of Guatemala. It is located exactly on the state border with Mexico and an impressive and challenging mountain with an altitude of officially 4065 meters (according to my GPSR even 4095m). Its slopes are wooded almost to the summit and the climb is rewarding. Be sure to have the appropriate equipment with you. Nights at this altitude are very cold!
There are several ascents, including a long way from Mexico and two ways from Guatemala. The path I suggested from the Guatemalan side is the shortest and easiest (see trailhead). You have to drive over some bad roads from San Marcos to Sibinal and then continue on a gravel road to a turnoff. The left path leads to Mexico and to the ascent from there. The right way is clearly marked with a wooden sign saying "Tacaná" and leads to the described starting point.
Once there, park the car to the right of the road and turn left to the first houses of the small settlement. There you can rent a guide and also mules. The path is not difficult to find, but the height and weight of the equipment to be carried in case of overnight accommodation requires good physical condition, and a carrier or pack animal helps. The mountain can also be done as a day trip, since the ascent can be mastered in four to five hours. In any case take enough hydration stock!
Below the summit there is a large flat area at an altitude of approx. 3975 meters, which is ideal for camping. If an overnight stay is planned (highly recommended), it is advisable to start early in the morning - still in darkness - to the summit to enjoy the view. It’ll take you about half an hour to get there (120 m of altitude). I strongly recommend some medication against altitude sickness to take along with you!
The cache is located under a larger rock in direction 1° north and 21 meters from the highest concrete mark of the state border. Please hide the cache carefully again, otherwise it might fall victim to local garbage collectors!
As this cache is of course an attractive target at an altitude of over 4000m, please pay attention to the following: Request for honest physical logging and a (voluntary) photo of your logbook entry or yourself at ground zero is very welcome!

El volcán Tacaná es el segundo pico más alto de la serie de volcanes altos de Guatemala. Se encuentra exactamente en la frontera del estado con México y es una montaña impresionante y desafiante con una altitud de 4065 metros oficialmente (de acuerdo con mi GPSR incluso 4095m). Sus laderas están arboladas casi hasta la cima y la subida es gratificante. Sean bien equipados, ya que las noches estarán muy frías.
Hay varias subidas, incluyendo un largo camino desde México y dos desde Guatemala. El camino más recomendable del lado guatemalteco es el más corto y fácil (ver el comienzo del sendero). Tienes que conducir por algunas carreteras malas desde San Marcos hasta Sibinal y luego continuar por un camino de terrasseria hacia un desvío. El camino de la izquierda conduce a México y al ascenso desde allí. El camino correcto está claramente marcado con un rótulo de madera que dice "Tacaná" y conduce al punto de partida descrito.
Una vez allí, estacione el automóvil a la derecha de la carretera y dirigense a la izquierda hacia las primeras casas del pequeño asentamiento. Allí puedes alquilar una guía y también mulas. El camino no es difícil de encontrar, pero la altura y el peso del equipo que se transportará en el caso de una noche de campamento requiere una buena condición física, y un mochilero o animal de carga ayuda. La montaña también se puede hacer como una excursión de un día, ya que el ascenso se puede dominar en cuatro a cinco horas. En cualquier caso, tome suficientes existencias de hidratación!
Debajo de la cumbre hay una gran área plana a una altitud de aprox. 3975 metros, que es ideal para acampar. Si se planea una estadía de una noche (muy recomendada), es recomendable comenzar temprano en la mañana, aún en la oscuridad, hasta la cima para disfrutar de la vista. La caché se encuentra debajo de una roca grande en dirección 1° norte y 21 metros de la marca de hormigón más alta de la frontera estatal. Por favor, vuelva a esconder la caché con cuidado, de lo contrario, podría ser víctima de los recolectores de basura locales.
Como este caché es, por supuesto, un objetivo atractivo a una altitud de más de 4000 m, preste atención a lo siguiente: ¡Se agradece el log físico honesto y una foto (voluntaria) de su entrada en el libro de registro o usted mismo en la zona cero!

Der Vulkan Tacaná ist der zweithöchste Gipfel in der Reihe der hohen Vulkane Guatemalas. Er befindet sich genau an der Staatsgrenze zu Mexiko und ist mit einer Höhe von offiziell 4065 Metern ein eindrucksvoller und herausfordernder Berg (laut meinem Garmin sogar 4095m). Seine Hänge sind fast bis zum Gipfel bewaldet und der Anstieg lohnend. Hochalpine Ausrüstung unbedingt erforderlich!
Es gibt mehrere Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten, darunter ein langer Weg von Mexiko und zwei Wege von Guatemala. Der von mir vorgeschlagene Weg von guatemaltekischer Seite aus ist der Kürzeste und Leichteste (siehe Trailhead). Man muss über teils schlechte Straßen von San Marcos bis zum Ort Sibinal fahren und dann auf einer Schotterstraße weiter bis zu einer Abzweigung. Der linke Weg führt nach Mexiko und zu den dortigen Aufstiegen, der rechte Weg ist deutlich mit einer Tafel und „Tacaná“ beschriftet und führt zum beschriebenen Anfangspunkt.
Dort angekommen parkt man rechts von der Straße das Auto und wendet sich linkerhand zu den ersten Häusern der kleinen Siedlung. Dort kann man einen Führer und auch Maultiere mieten. Der Weg ist nicht schwierig zu finden aber die Höhe und das Gewicht der mitzuführenden Ausrüstung im Falle einer Übernachtung erfordern eine gute physische Kondition und ein Träger oder Tragtier erleichtern das Ganze sehr. Man kann den Berg auch als Tagestour anlegen, da der Aufstieg in vier bis fünf Stunden zu bewältigen ist. Nehmt auf jeden Fall ausreichend Trinkvorrat mit!
Unter dem Gipfel befindet sich auf ca. 3975 Metern Höhe eine ebene Fläche, die sich hervorragend zum Campieren eignet. Sollte eine (sehr zu empfehlende) Übernachtung geplant sein, so empfiehlt es sich, frühmorgens noch in der Dunkelheit zum Gipfel aufzubrechen, um die Aussicht zu genießen. Medikamente gegen Höhenkrankheit unbedingt mitbringen!
Der Cache befindet sich unter einem größeren Stein in 1° nördlicher Richtung und in 21 Metern Entfernung von der Betonmarkierung der Grenze am Gipfel. Bitte versteckt den Cache wieder sorgfältig, da er sonst womöglich den einheimischen Müllsammlern zum Opfer fallen könnte!
Da dieser Cache natürlich ein attraktives Ziel mit über 4000m Höhe darstellt, bitte ich um Beachtung des Folgenden: Bitte um ehrliches physisches Loggen und (um das zu beweisen, obwohl es nicht in den Richtlinien steht) um ein (freiwilliges) Foto eures Logbucheintrags!
