Geocache Description:

Tywardreath Village Hall

The village hall was originally built in the 1840's as a National Board School for the poor boys and girls of the parish. Wealthier parents including farmers would have sent their children to private schools at this time.
The land for the school was provided by Mr J Bassett who had interests in the mines and other industrial enterprises in the area. To mark the importance of Mr Bassett and the other big landowner, Mr Rashleigh, their coats of arms, together with that of the Tywardreath Priory, are carved on plaques mounted high on the front of the building.
As was the standard of the time, the school had separate entrances and classrooms for boys and girls.
In 1903 a new school for the boys was built down the road and in 1916 the girls also moved to this new building which remains today an active and well regarded junior school serving the local community.

The village hall serves as a base for the local scout's organisation as well as being a centre for many activities, events and meetings of the village community.
