We moved to Florida in 2013. And have encountered many living things that we had not before in living in Virginia. In our yard, we have had many tree frogs, armadillos, a flock of wild parrots, snakes and many different butterflies.
We came home from a vacation one time and found my flower garden pretty much gone. We had no idea what happened while we were gone. While surveying the damage we found 27 caterpillars. We did some research, I rushed out to buy more plants for our little critters to eat. We placed them in a safe area with plenty of food and watched them grow, then turn into their chrysalis and then into a beautiful butterfly.
Monarchs are on the Endangered list. So we have taken care to cultivate our garden to attract many more to our yard. We have had the pleasure of raising over 200 since then.

The monarch butterfly or simply monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae.[4] Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown.[5] It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species.[6] Its wings feature an easily recognizable black, orange, and white pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 cm (3 1⁄2–4 in)[7] The viceroy butterfly is similar in color and pattern, but is markedly smaller and has an extra black stripe across each hindwing.
