Ubicato in posizione elevata, l'antico maniero è costituito da un grande edificio dal quale si erge una torre quadrata. La costruzione primitiva, di cui oggi non rimangono che i basamenti della torre, venne iniziata nel 1242 da Giacomo di Bard, fondatore della casata dei Sarre.
Nel 1869 re Vittorio Emanuele II acquistò il castello Divenne residenza del sovrano durante i suoi soggiorni di caccia in Valle d'Aosta.
Nel 1989 il complesso fu acquistato della Regione Valle d'Aosta e, dopo lavori di adeguamento normativo, di restauro e di allestimento, è oggi nuovamente aperto al pubblico.
Al piano terra, un museo illustra la storia del castello, il suo rapporto con le più antiche dimore sabaude di caccia, le fasi di ammobiliamento e di rinnovamento abitativo, attraverso disegni e inventari storici.
Al piano nobile, èpossibile percorrere la galleria monumentale, visitare la gran sala del gioco e dei trofei venatori e alcune stanze private. Ritratti, cimeli, fotografie, stampe, libri, oggetti preziosi, dipinti, sculture e arredi di pregio accompagnano il visitatore lungo il percorso museale.

Located in an elevated position, the ancient manor consists of a large building with a square tower. The primitive construction, of which today only the bases of the tower remain, was begun in 1242 by Giacomo di Bard, founder of the Sarre family.
In 1869 King Vittorio Emanuele II bought the castle It became the residence of the sovereign during his hunting stays in Valle d'Aosta.
In 1989 the complex was purchased by the Valle d'Aosta Region and, after works of regulatory adaptation, restoration and construction, is now open to the public again.
On the ground floor, a museum illustrates the history of the castle, its relationship with the most ancient Savoy residences of hunting, the stages of furnishing and renovation, through historical drawings and inventories.
On the main floor, it is possible to walk the monumental gallery, visit the great hall of the game and the hunting trophies and some private rooms. Portraits, memorabilia, photographs, prints, books, precious objects, paintings, sculptures and precious furnishings accompany the visitor along the museum itinerary.
