Not too long ago I visited the high cross in Moone, a wonderful piece of early medieval religious art. When we left we discovered another amazing building just a few metres down the road. Behind iron gates one can see a castle-like structure and right beside the gate what seemed to be an inhabitated porter's lodge.
I went online and researched what this amazing building was. It took a while but then I found a website called "Ireland in Ruins" (http://irelandinruins.blogspot.ie/2012/12/belan-house-co-kildare.html) I have compiled the most important facts here, but If you would like to learn more, you can do here.
The building used to be a corn mill owned by Ebenezer Shackleton, uncle of the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton, who resided in Belan lodge. The is said to have been constructed in the late 18th or early 19th century and it was noted for having one of the deepest and longest millraces in the country.
The cache is a nano container hidden close to the gate. BYOP.
