Geocache Description:

Another in our remembering the fallen series

The Lysterfield Avenue of Honour, on the corner of Lysterfield and Wellington Roads, was planted in 1919, on the initiative of a local resident to honour the men of Lysterfield who served in the First World War. Of the fourteen men enlisted from Lysterfield, ten returned. Four English Oaks were planted for the soldiers killed in action and ten Silky Oaks planted for those who returned. Initially the avenue was well tended and there were name plates for each tree. However, over the years the name plates disappeared and the avenue deteriorated, almost to the point where it was unrecognisable.

During the 1990s, the avenue was under threat by proposed road widening, however local resident Ed Williams acted to have the trees protected. After much work involving two Councils (Knox and Yarra Ranges), the Australian Army, donations from local people to put more plaques on to cover the First and Second World Wars, Vietnam and Korean wars; the memorial was ready for 'Australia Remembers' in 1995. This war memorial also acknowledges service in East Timor in 2000. In addition to maintaining the avenue of oak trees, two Aleppo Pines descending from the original Lone Pine of Gallipoli have been planted.
