Cache Info: This is a medium sized plastic ammunition container.

The rock surface you are standing on was formed over 300 million years ago and at that time it was several miles below the earth’s surface. As time passed the overlying burden of soil and rock was eroded and weathered away.

As the weight of overburden material is removed, the rock tends to expand, creating stress, especially in the surface layers of rock. This causes the immediate surface layer of rock to crack, buckle and break away from the underlying layers of rock. Geologists call this exfoliation, which is a natural geologic process that breaks down all granite and granite gneiss rock outcrops. Some people say “the mountain is continually losing its skin”. Exfoliation is especially noticeable on the rock outcrop west of Klondike Road.

Arabia Mountain has numerous boulders like the one you see here. They are more resistant to weathering than the surrounding surface, but over geologic time they will be weathered away and new boulders will appear. Rock jointing may have an effect on boulder formation.
