Quarrying was not extensive to the south of Arabia Mountain and this location was the main drill site. Before quarrying started, the quarry workers “raised a ledge”, which was a horizontal rift in the rock at the elevation sought. A rift could cover an acre of land and greatly facilitated quarrying. The procedure for “raising a ledge” is covered in a fact sheet for the AMNHA: Quarry Explosives Storage Box .
At this site, quarrying started at the point where the horizontal rift plane intersected the rock surface. The first vertical rock face was probably less than one foot. As quarrying progressed, subsequent rock faces were progressively higher until reaching the final rock face that you now see.
