Salisbury Composite High School - CARW2018
With this years CARW having a ‘Back to Geo-School’ theme, we thought we would school everyone with some actual schools! These caches will give you some history on some of the schools in the Strathcona County / Sherwood Park area. We hope you enjoy being schooled!
As mentioned in a previous cache in this series, both cache owners attended and graduated from Salisbury Composite High School.
The original high school was built on the intersection of Highway 14 and the now Anthony Henday Drive. When you drive by you can still see the octagon shaped gymnasium, which is the only piece of the school not demolished in 2015. Salisbury High School was built in 1953 and moved to the centre of Sherwood Park in 1969, when a new high school was constructed. F.R. Haythorne took over the vacant building in 1969, until it moved as well in 1993 to a new building.
When the high school opened in 1953, Sherwood Park was struggling to keep up with the growth of this community. Between 1953, when Salisbury opened, and 1972, ten new schools opened in the Sherwood Park area.
