Geocache Description:

Colchester School - CARW2018

The cache is not at the posted coordinates, do not enter paste the barricades or fences.

With this years CARW having a ‘Back to Geo-School’ theme, we thought we would school everyone with some actual schools!  These caches will give you some history on some of the schools in the Strathcona County / Sherwood Park area.  We hope you enjoy being schooled!

Originally built near the Wimbledon School (built in 1898) site in 1958, Colchester was already knee deep in history.  Wimbeldon was a one room log school house in the Colchester School District with 47 students. In 1938, Colchester School re-opened in a new two-room school located near Highway 14, where is sits vacant still today.

The decision to close the school for the 2013 - 2014 school year was due to the new 500-kv Heartland Transmission Power Lines, and their close proximity to the school.  Although the line builder offered alternative routes around the school, the School Division opted to move the students to Fultonvale Elementary - Junior High School.

Colchester School has been sitting status quo for the last few years, as the School Division is working on turning the building over to Strathcona County, at which time it will be transferred over to Alberta Infrastructure, where its future will be determined.
