Remnants of Quarrying

The rock pile and vertical rock face at this location are remnants of quarrying that took place more than a century ago.

The outcrop south of Arabia Mountain was not quarried as heavily as some other parts of the preserve. Because of that, the signs of quarrying here blend more quietly into the natural landscape.

The quarry faces are relatively low, and the worked areas are intermingled with unquarried stone, making this section feel less industrial than other quarry sites nearby.

A Changing Forest

As you travel through this area, you may notice a large number of standing dead pine trees. A Southern Pine Beetle infestation killed many of them in 2017.

In mixed forests, a die-off like this can speed the transition toward a more hardwood-dominated landscape. Here, however, the more open conditions and abundant sunlight may allow pine to remain the dominant tree for longer.

During September, this area has a brilliant daisy floral display.

Seasonal Color

This area changes again in late summer and early fall, when bright yellow daisies create a striking display across the outcrop.

It is one more reminder that even places marked by quarrying and forest loss continue to shift, recover, and surprise.

Even a worked landscape can still hold beauty, change, and renewal.
