Black Spored Quillwort is a rare and endangered aquatic plant with only 11 populations in Georgia and one population in South Carolina. It grows exclusively in solution pits on granite rock outcrops, often with only two centimeters of soil. One of the populations is located in solution pits on the summit of the south peak of Arabia Mountain. New leaves sprout quickly during winter rains, but shrivel up during dry periods.
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service is attempting to establish new locations where the quillwort can survive and thus increase the population of quillworts. They have sculpted several small pits at three locations on the rock outcrop at Arabia Mountain. One of the locations is near this geocache. If you look around, you will see the pits. Do not disturb them or the small green plants that may be in the pits
