A Small Stream with a Big Role
Stephenson Creek is one of the smallest streams in the South River watershed, yet it plays an important role in shaping the landscape around you.
Its headwaters begin near Vaughters’ Farm, where a narrow ribbon of woods and a seasonally wet meadow mark the earliest flow of the stream.
From there, the creek winds south through the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve before merging with Pole Bridge Creek, which eventually flows into the South River.
Protected and Remarkably Clear
Because nearly all of Stephenson Creek lies within protected land, it is largely shielded from the impacts of development. As a result, the water here often runs clear.
Along its path, the creek feeds wetlands and supplies water to both Retreat House Lake and Arabia Lake, connecting many of the landscapes explored throughout this series.
If you continue exploring, caches such as AMNHA: Retreat House and AMNHA: Lake Feeder Creek help tell more of this connected water story.

Wildlife Along the Water
Beaver activity can often be seen along this stretch of the creek, especially between Retreat House Lake and its downstream connections.
These natural engineers shape the flow of water, creating ponds and wetlands that support a wide range of plant and animal life.
What begins as a narrow trickle becomes a lifeline that connects forests, wetlands, and lakes across the preserve.
