AMNHA Geo-Path Series

AMNHA: Polished Rocks

Series: Lands Less Visited

Password: Located in the logbook

Cache Info: This is a medium sized plastic ammunition container.

Notice the polished rocks on the west side of the trail. Why and when they were dumped there will never be known.

On the east side of the trail, at this location, is a high vertical rock face that was once totally covered with graffiti. The graffiti has been camouflaged to look natural. The orange discoloration on the rock face is natural and probably due to iron in the water runoff. Because the discoloration naturally occurred, it was not camouflaged. Some of the black discoloration streaks are natural and some are manmade.

Take time to go around and up to the top of the vertical rock wall. Notice the long line of drill holes. Before steel wedges could be driven into the holes, quarrying at this location apparently ceased. Even so, the rock split along the line of drill holes. Possibly the holes became filled with water, and on a severely cold night the water froze, allowing the expansive pressure of the ice to split the rock along the line of drill holes. Ten years ago, the split was very thin, but now it has considerably enlarged. Nearby pieces of the rock face have recently fractured. This is evidence of the weathering process by which granite outcrops are worn down.

As you travel along the trail notice the large number of nearby standing, but dead pines. They were killed by a recent Southern Pine Beetle infestation.

Line Of Drill Holes.

Park at the Arabia Mountain Nature Center Parking Lot on Klondike Road. Take the Mile Rock Trail onto the rock outcrop and follow the rock cairns to the cache.
