A Hidden Piece of the Landscape
Tucked away along the trails, Arabia Lake and its dam are quiet reminders of the area’s industrial past, now softened by time and nature.
Arabia Lake was built around 1910 to supply water for nearby quarry operations. Over time, trees and vegetation grew along the dam, blending it into the surrounding landscape so that today it appears almost natural.
At one time, the lake level was significantly higher. Before DeKalb County acquired the property in 1972, the spillway was damaged, causing the water level to slowly drop over the years.
Around 2008, efforts were made to stabilize the spillway and prevent further loss. That repair created what you see today: a small waterfall spilling over the dam and a series of cascades just below.
The Cascades Below
Follow the water as it moves beyond the dam and you will find a layered cascade flowing across the granite. These small features change with the seasons, from gentle trickles during dry periods to more active flows after rain.
It is an easy place to pause, listen, and take in the contrast between engineered history and natural renewal.
After rain, this area comes alive.
A Landscape in Motion
As you travel along the Mile Rock Trail, look closely at the exposed granite around you. Arabia Mountain is constantly changing through a process known as exfoliation.
Over millions of years, as the weight of overlying material was removed, the granite slowly expanded. This causes thin outer layers to separate and peel away, almost like the mountain is shedding its skin.
These subtle changes are part of what makes this landscape unique. Even in stillness, it is always evolving.
Getting There
Park at the Arabia Mountain Nature Center on Klondike Road. From there, follow the paved PATH south toward the Quarry Office area.
Leave the PATH and take the Mile Rock Trail, marked by rock cairns. Continue to the intersection with the Forest Trail and follow it a short distance to reach the cache.
