Geocache Description:

The cache is located about 1/4 mile from the Concession area parking lot. One can take Channel Cat Trail across the beach area to start. There are some inclines on the trail, but no long steep grades. The cache is hidden about 40 feet off Channel Cat Trail behind the Legacy Wayside near some down logs.

The park was built in 1938 as a project of the Virginia Department of Agriculture through the State Forestry Division. Although this project was undertaken during the closing days of the Great Depression, the 100 men who built the lake were not members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. They were simply carpenters, farmers and unskilled laborers seeking jobs. Along with the lake, these men built two pavilions, a concession stand and six fireplaces. The land was given to the Division of State Parks in 1940, and it was operated as a day-use recreation area. In 1962 the division added campgrounds and the area's name was changed to Bear Creek Lake State Park.

This is a single traditional cache. In the cache will be a log book, an information card about Bear Creek Lake State Park, a card interpreting the location from an ecological and historical point of view, and information about the lake which features early Park infrastructure, all of which help solve some of the junior ranger activities. The direct return to the parking area will be back along the same route to get to the cache.
