Geocache Description:

The lands which comprise Rossmore Forest Park was formerly part of the barony of Rossmore. A castle was constructed in 1827 with various extensions being added over the years. The site of the castle can still be seen in the park. As with many estates of the time, Rossmore fell into decline during the mid 20th century and the estate was subsequently divided among the local farmers with the Irish Forestry Division acquiring the forested areas. Rossmore Castle was demolished in 1974.

Rossmore Forest Park is located only two miles southwest of Monaghan Town and covers a large area of approximately six by three miles. Within its bounds are five fishing lakes. The forests are primarily deciduous with numerous fine specimens of oak, ash, spruce, beech, larch, and giant redwood. It also boasts extensive plantings of rhododendron, many of which were planted over a hundred years ago and are a riot of colour in early summer.

Rossmore

There are great walks within Rossmore Forest Park. The park has well-maintained paths, several of which are suitable for wheelchair-bound visitors. These walks range in length from two to four miles and are well posted. The most scenic, the Priestfield, with its colonnade of yews, is approximately three miles long and leads past the Rossmore family crypt.

Walk: Castle trail: takes the walker through the more historical area of the park. Some of the man-made features that you will meet include the ruins of Rossmore Castle, the walled garden, Fish Hatchery and reservoir. A further attraction on this walk is an avenue of yew trees which runs for approximately 500 meters from the walled garden.

Lake

Lakes Trail: As the name suggests this trail takes the walker to various lakes and watercourses in the park.

Nature trail: follows a tarmacadam track through the wood which is adjacent to the car park. There are various marked stops along the way for added interest. There is also a tarmacadam path leading to a picnic area and a viewing point overlooking Barnhill Lake. This trail is suitable for wheelchair users.
Cycle: part of the forest has a cycle-friendly trail as part of a long distance route.
Fishing: apply to local anglers club for permission.

Facilities include a spacious car park, toilets, picnic tables, litter bins, and a large, weather-protected map of the entire park and its trails.

There is a fabulous play area that younger cachers will definitely enjoy.
