Oysters in Somerville? Take 2! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

stellar_singularity: After the new church’s maintenance “cleaned up” several of my caches, I was eventually able to get in touch with the church who said they’d talk with maintenance (since they’d already approved the cache). Unfortunately, soon after this I lost my job and then my home and am no longer close enough to be able to maintain it.

Archiving to free up space. Please don’t hide another micro in the woods though please.

Geocache Description:

BYOP! Please try to add cammo after signing the log. Thank you!

The geocache is hidden on the side of Peters Brook where the church is. The church is now the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Somerset Hills. Permission has been obtained for parking and finding the cache, but please avoid times when events or services are taking place. Parking is also available on the streets outside of the parking lot. The embankment is VERY steep so please be careful and use extreme caution. You do NOT need to climb down it. I have not been back there in the warmer months but the previous CO did warn of poison ivy.

When I attempted to find the original geocache hidden at this location, the CO and I worked together and it was determined it had been muggled. I really thought this was a special location to visit, I mean oysters? Really? The area is littered with them! Her church no longer resided at this location so she decided it was time to archive it. Wanting to bring more people to see this unique place, I decided to bring it back and maintain it. Below is a blurb from the original geocache page:

Inquiries as to how those shells got there lead to the question as to who occupied the place prior to the Christian Science Church in 1967. The answers were inconclusive and ranged from an Indian meeting place to the site of a mansion, to a house that fell into the brook, to the site of a slaughter house. Whatever structure stood there, its inhabitants used that particular area as a dump. Chards of pottery, glass bottles, horse shoes, and even the porcelain leg of a small doll seem to confirm that

~Congrats to VforGreen on the FTF!~

UPDATE: (03/22/2020): Since I’ve had 2 lock and lock containers go missing shortly after placing them, and even a temporary cache a kind geocacher left when they discovered it gone, I’ve since changed the size from a small to a micro. If it goes missing, we’ll know for sure if it’s been a furry creature or someone taking the caches (permission for this geocache to be placed was given). You’ll understand why when you find it.

UPDATE (04/28/2021): This is my 4th time replacing the container and will be the last. This container and the last could not have gone missing by mistake. I took over this cache because I wanted to continue to bring people to see these oysters shells so I'll keep my fingers crossed!

UPDATE: (07/19/2021): It's gone missing... again! But I'm stubborn! I'm in the process of reaching out to the church to ensure they're still aware of it, what it is, and that they're still okay with having this near/on their property. If it is not them removing it, I will try one last critter proof container before throwing in the towel.
