Berten Pil werd geboren te Zonnebeke op 9 mei 1892. Hij genoot een zorgeloze jeugd. Zowel op school als in het verenigingsleven behaalde hij mooie successen. Bij de start van de oorlog wilde Berten zich aanmelden als vrijwilliger, maar hij mocht niet van zijn vader. Enkele maanden later ging Berten zich toch aanmelden als oorlogsvrijwilliger te Calais. Na een opleiding van 13 maanden, vertrok hij naar het front. Hij was sergeant in de 10e companie van het derde bataljon. Nadat hij eerst werd gepromoveerd tot adjudant en daarna tot hulponderluitenant, hielp Berten mee met de 2e fase van het bevrijdingsoffensief. Op 15 augustus 1919 werd hij gedemobiliseerd. Na 51 maanden legerdienst had hij 5 frontstrepen en 4 eretekens verdiend. Na zijn legerdienst behaalde hij nog zijn doctoraat in de chemie waarna hij ging werken bij nv Gevaert (fotoproducten).

Au début de la guerre, Berten voulait s'inscrire comme volontaire, mais son père ne l'autorisait pas. Quelques mois plus tard, Berten va s'inscrire comme volontaire de guerre à Calais. Après une formation de 13 mois, il est parti pour le front. Il était sergent dans la 10ième compagnie du troisième bataillon. Après avoir été promu adjudant, puis lieutenant adjoint, Berten a participé à la deuxième phase de l'offensive de libération. Le 15 août 1919, il a été démobilisé. Après 51 mois de service militaire, il a obtenu 5 lignes de front et 4 marques honorifiques. Après son service militaire, il a obtenu son doctorat en chimie, après quoi il a commencé à travailler chez nv Gevaert (produits photo).

Berten Pil was born in Zonnebeke on May 9th, 1892. He enjoyed a carefree childhood. He achieved good success both at school and in club life. At the start of the war Berten wanted to sign up as a volunteer, but he was not allowed by his father. A few months later Berten went to register as a war volunteer in Calais. After a training of 13 months, he left for the front. He was a sergeant in the 10th company of the third battalion. After he was first promoted to adjutant and then to assistant lieutenant, Berten helped with the second phase of the liberation offensive. On August 15th 1919 he was demobilized. After 51 months military service he had earned 5 front lines and 4 honorary marks. After his military service he obtained his doctorate in chemistry after which he started working at nv Gevaert (photo products).
