Geocache Description:

This geocache bas been placed with the kind permission of Loudon Pond Volunteer Group.

You are looking for an ammo can. Plenty of space for swaps, geocoins and travel bugs.

Rigside and Douglas Water Community Nature Reserve, which sits between the village of Douglas Water and the river itself, is a precious resource for the local community and for many from further afield. It is an oasis for birds, with many winter visitors, and animals including herons, lapwings, geese by the hundred, whooper swans and otters. It offers access to beautiful countryside and has the potential for enhanced pathway networks. It is an opportunity to link people from the local area and beyond with nature.

The Loudon Pond Association was originally formed in 1994 to clean up an area of flooded mining subsidence, known locally as Loudon Pond, and turn it into a community nature reserve.

The Association lease the land from Douglas and Angus Estates, and manage the reserve in the local and public interest.

The reserve was never really taken to heart by the community and interest waned in the association after 2008; the nature reserve was neglected and has become very overgrown with Rosebay Willowherb and invasive, non-native Snowberry and Sitka Spruce, and is now used primarily for dog walking.

A new generation of committee members is now trying to revitalise the reserve and create access-for-all paths to make it easier for everybody to visit; volunteers are always welcome in order to enable them to continue maintaining and improving the nature reserve and the planned footpath network. Help is needed to remove the invasive species, to plant native trees and fill the reserve with woodland flowers, a community orchard, new habitats for nature including bird and bat boxes, bee walls and beetle hotels, and a woodland activity and camping centre.

There is plenty of natural camo available, please use as much as you need to hide the container.
