A roadside shrine that caught our attention as we drove by one day; someone has gone to the trouble to create a little garden at this otherwise uninteresting spot and it's a nice place to take a break on your way up the mountain road.
The sign on the shrine says the following:
“Small Church” dedicated to Our Lady of Sufferance.
In memory of Athanasios Nickolaou. 26 years old from Australia. Found hidden dead under the bridge of Allassa on 29.09.2005 whilst on duty in the National Guard.
It's a sad story of a young life lost too soon - please take a moment to remember this young man before continuing with your day.
Once you've turned into the road by the shrine, don't be tempted to continue further - although there's room to turn further on, there is no exit and you'll be met by swarms of angry bees as there are several hives situated in the middle of the road.
