Geocache Description:

Nineteenth in a series of caches highlighting the art of Norfolk's Chrysler Museum, One Memorial Place, Norfolk, VA 23510. The Chrysler Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday from Noon to 5 pm. Admission is Free. Website: www.chrysler.org. This may be seen in Gallery 109 at the museum.

This is an ancient Egyptian stone coffin (sarcophagus) weighing 10,000-17,000 pounds. It dates from 664-525 BCE. Carved out of gray schist, the sarcophagus served as the outer protection for a wooden coffin with a mummy inside of it. Inscribed across its top are hieroglyphics from the Book of the Dead. Its lid shows the idealized face of the deceased with long hair and an upturned braided false-beard. He's wearing a necklace with 12 rows of beads alternating flowers and geometrical patterns, with a falcon head on each shoulder. Underneath his collar is a crouching goddess, spreading winged arms and holding a feather in each hand, with a sun-disk on her head. The space between the goddess and the feet of the sarcophagus contains 8 deities. On the right, a baboon-headed deity, a falcon-headed deity, one erased by a crack, and one showing the tip of an animal head. On the left, an anthropoid god, another now erased by a crack, a second anthropoid god, and a falcon-headed god carrying a jar.

The hieroglyphs on its cover identify the deceased as Psamtik-Seneb, meaning "the scorpion charmer." Scorpion charmers were healers who treated scorpion stings and snakes bites. The pharaohs valued scorpion charmers, employed them in their personal service & included them on royal expeditions. Given the size and intricacy of the sarcophagus, the presence of alabaster canopic jars (holding internal bodily organs) in the tomb, along with numerous shabties (servants in the netherlife), the deceased was a wealthy man.
