Saturday 28th April 2018 - 10.00 am to 12.30 pm
Petersham Lodge Woods is a quiet woodland beside the busy towpath between Ham House and Richmond. The area gets flooded regularly by the spring tides and litter from the river gets left behind. The wind also blows in litter from the towpath. The aim of this CITO is to collect litter in the woodlands, but also along the towpath to Ham House. The full bin bags will be placed next to the bins at the north end of River Lane, where the council will collect them.
There is limited free parking along River Lane, which fills up quickly. Ham House car park has plenty of free spaces and is only a short walk away. Bus routes #65 and #371 serve the area from both Richmond and Kingston Station, and stop along nearby Petersham Road. There is a small pedestrian ferry from Twickenham to near Ham House, which usually runs from 10.00 am on weekends, so if you take that, you'd arrive slightly late but that's no problem if you let us know in advance. You can also cycle along the towpath.
If you are staying in central London and would like to join us for this event, then your options are taking either the District Line (underground, green on map) or the London Overground (train, orange on map) to Richmond. From Richmond Station you take bus #65 towards Kingston and get off at a stop called "The Dysart". From there it is a short walk to the river and the event. I will be somewhere near the posted coordinates with equipment and the log book. It takes about an hour to get from central London to the location of this event. Please note that the trains from London Waterloo do not stop in Richmond this weekend, due to engineering works.
We have about 6 litter pickers and a few pairs of gloves that you can borrow, but if you have your own, please bring them along. We will provide bin bags. The woodland can get boggy in some areas, but the towpath is paved and flat, which makes this event wheelchair accessible. There are public toilets a 5-minute walk away along the towpath towards Richmond.
Of course there are also plenty of caches to be found in the area, and you will receive a CITO souvenir for your efforts. We're hoping to see as many of you as possible!
