Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to one of the more strangely named places in Ontario, Dogs Nest.

A hamlet located on Highway 6 east of Port Dover was once the home of a tavern and less than a handful of houses.  There are differing stories from local residents of the origin of how this community aquired it's name, but all seem to revolve around a dog and her puppies.

One story related the tale of an inebriated teamster who sought refuge one late night at the inn. Finding no bed available, he bedded down in some hay, only to awake the next morning with a dog and her new-born puppies curled up next to him. When asked where he slept, he stated that it was in "a dog's nest".

Still another version refers to the name of the tavern itself. The inn in question may have received its name when a dog gave birth to her litter in one of the rooms. The moniker, "The Dog's Nest" was struck and became part of the local lore. The sign that hung out front depicted a dog and her pups.  For many years this sign swung from a post beside the tavern and served as a welcome landmark for early travellers.

The third version is less than complimentary. People with higher expectations for their overnight accommodation would refer to the establishment as a "dog's nest of a place".

Regardless of how the community received its name, it was officially recognized by the provincial Department of Highways in 1960 when they erected roadside signs along Highway 6.  The signs themselves have been stolen numerous times over the years, as they seem to be a collector's item. The provincial government has obviously given up replacing them, as there is no current signage located along the the roadside alerting travellers of this hamlet. Now you have to be quick, you can easily miss this little hamlet as you can arrive and depart in a few seconds.

Enjoy your stopover at Dogs Nest!
