FYC - Nansemond Indian Tribal Center Traditional Cache

The Chesapeake Bay, the great rivers that feed it, and the vast landscapes surrounding them are at the center of our nation’s story. The Find Your Chesapeake (FYC) GeoTour launched June 9, 2018 with over 60 caches within Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania. and Delaware. A trackable geocoin will be awarded to the first 400 geocachers, while supplies last, for locating at least 20 FYC caches. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers must download a passport from the Find Your Chesapeake GeoTour website. Geocachers must find and log at least 20 finds, record the code word from each cache on their passport. After discovering the 20 required caches, geocachers may have their passports validated via mail at the National Park Service, Chesapeake Bay Office located at 410 Severn Ave, Suite 314, Annapolis, MD 21403. Please refer to the passport for complete validation instructions.

Participating in the FYC GeoTour is fun and we hope that many people join in. However, it is not a requirement for logging your find on this cache once you find the container.

The Nansemond Indians today still live in their ancestral homelands here in Tidewater Virginia. A few years ago, the tribe launched a 70+ acre development called ‘Mattanock Town’, recalling a town name on maps from 400 years ago. The project site lays along the Nansemond River and is designed to bring visitors to their land to learn more about the history and conservation of the Nansemond Indians. In the town, you will find a tribal center, nature trails, and various events open to the public. Join them for a Powwow that occurs yearly and learn about the culture that still thrives today.

The cache is located at the entrance gate to the tribal center - there is no need to cross through or over the gate to get the cache. The tribal center is ONLY open on Saturdays between 10AM and 2PM but the cache can be accessed during daylight hours any day of the week at the entrance gate on Pembroke Lane. Please obey all No Trespassing signs. Please DO NOT attempt to get to this cache from Lone Star Lake Park. Please use the parking coordinates and make sure not to block any driveways.
