FYC - Susquehannock State Park Traditional Cache

The Chesapeake Bay, the great rivers that feed it, and the vast landscapes surrounding them are at the center of our nation’s story. More than 2,600 miles of designated water trails, 55 units of the National Park System, and scores of state parks, local parks, and wildlife refuges are found within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The Find Your Chesapeake (FYC) GeoTour launched June 9, 2018 with over 60 caches within Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania. and Delaware. A trackable geocoin will be awarded to the first 400 geocachers, while supplies last, for locating at least 20 FYC caches. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers must download a passport from the Find Your Chesapeake GeoTour website. Geocachers must find and log at least 20 finds, record the code word from each cache on their passport. After discovering the 20 required caches, geocachers may have their passports validated via mail at the National Park Service, Chesapeake Bay Office located at 410 Severn Ave, Suite 314, Annapolis, MD 21403. Participating in the FYC GeoTour is fun and we hope that many people join in. However, it is not a requirement for logging your find on this cache once you find the container.

Imagine it’s a crisp summer morning in 1608 – you’ve been sailing all night on the rolling Susquehanna River when you arrive on a beautiful piece of land. The people occupying this area are the Susquehannock Indians. They are speaking a different language called Iroquoian, and call you ‘Sasquesahanough’. Fast forward four-hundred years later, and the name of the river, the people who occupied it, and the state park is still derived from this name. The last place they occupied was about fifteen miles from this very spot, near present-day Conestoga, PA. Explore Susquehannock State Park scenic hiking trails that offer a variety of interesting habitats and evidence of past Susquehannock use of the area.

Susquehannock State Park is open from sunrise to sunset. This hide will require a somewhat difficult descent and will put you within 30 feet of cliffs. Please be careful while going for this cache and know your limitations. This cache is rated at 3.5 for terrain for the last 100-150 feet. You do not need to climb down the cliffs or need climbing gear to get this cache. A GZ photo is given to help you with the find. The photo was taken while looking back up to the trail.
