When I saw that there was a "Mermaid Pool" on the map, I just had to put a cache there.
Unfortunately when the river is not flowing strongly there is no pool to be seen but when it rains it must be a spectacular location. The valley, mountains and fresh air make it memorable all the time.
You reach the cache by following the jeep track from the road for about 1km until you are perpendicular to the cache. You then head straight for the river and should find it in about 65m from the track, next to the river.
This cache is placed along the Klipspringer Hiking Trail in the Steenbras Nature Reserve.
NO HIKING PERMIT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS TRAIL. (Unlike Steenbras Gorge and Crystal Pools)
This trail should only be attempted from 07:30 to 16:00.
The Steenbras Nature Reserve forms part of the greater Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The area is often referred to as ‘the heart of the fynbos.’
The reserve conserves a number of vegetation types including the critically endangered Kogelberg sandstone fynbos. The unique landscapes with its exceptional floral diversity is home to many interesting birds and animals, making the area well known for its scenic beauty.
