Geocache Description:

The listed coordinates indicate the American Legation Memorial Stones. The cache is not hidden at the listed coordinates.

The American Legation was first opened by Townsend Harris in 1859 at Zenpukuji Temple, Moto-Azabu, Minato-ku. In 1875, it was moved to the Tsukiji enclave for foreign residents here. In 1890, it was moved again to Akasaka at the site of the present U.S. Embassy. As a result of the last move, there were eight stones with three types of sculptures, bald eagle, American national flag, and star, in this area. In 1984, three stones were presented to the U.S. Embassy in Akasaka as a symbol of U.S.-Japan friendship and they are now in the front garden of the Embassy. Of the remaining five stones, two are located at the listed coordinates.

This cache is a letterbox hybrid. Please find the place where the remaining three stones were installed in the guide board at the listed coordinates. The cache is near one of the three stones.

The stamp (to stamp on your stamp book) and the stamp pad (to use if your stamp is not a self-inking stamp) are not swag items. Please bring your own pen.

アメリカ公使館は、安政6年（1859年）、ハリスにより港区元麻布の善福寺に開設され、明治8年（1875年）、築地外国人居留地内のこの地に新築されました。その後、明治23年（1890年）、赤坂に移転し、現在のアメリカ大使館となっています。最後の移転により、白頭鷲、星条旗、星の3種類の彫刻が施された8個の石標がこの地に残されました。8個の石標のうち3個は昭和59年（1984年）に日米友好のシンボルとして、赤坂のアメリカ大使館に寄贈され、現在、同大使館の前庭に配置されています。残る5個の石標のうち、2個は公開座標にあります。
