BLACKSHAWHEAD CHAPEL

Blackshawhead Chapel was built in 1815 by the Methodists in nearby Heptonstall to serve the local village.

It was extended a few years later by the addition of a Sunday School, which for many years was the only form of education available to village children.

The building has undergone several renovations, and today provides a place for the church to meet and worship, and also a suite of rooms which the community can use.

The building is being gradually renovated, as funding permits, to improve the quality of the facilities available.  The parishioner have recently refitted the upstairs hall and installed a stair lift, and renovated the ground floor rooms to make them energy efficient. They are grateful for the assistance of our local community in making this work possible.

The chapel is very much a part of the community, and as is the only place of worship in the village,  The membership comes from a variety of backgrounds - Anglicans and Catholics as well as Methodists and those with no particular denomination.

This diversity is reflected in the way worship is carried out.

The chapel aims to be the spiritual heart of the village, serving the local community in whatever ways it can. From time to time the chapel is open for a short while each week  for “the quiet place”, an informal spiritual experience drawing from a variety of faiths

For many years the chapel organises an annual village fun week, called “Celebrate Week” and they also help by making the building available for community events such as the village fete, and local history club exhibitions.

The chapel provides further ministry to the community through its graveyard, and the offer of accommodation for meetings of other occasional or regular users; this being even more necessary following the closure of the local pub.

The program of renovation is almost finished (March 2018) in partnership with the community.
