The village of Bishop's Cleeve is located to the north of Cheltenham. The village has a rapidly increasing population and is claimed to be England's largest village with a population of over 10,000 larger than the borough town of Tewkesbury.

The Tithe Barn was built at the gateway to the original village in the 15th century as a tithe barn for the Bishop of Worcester opposite the Bishop's summer residence Cleeve Hall. It was the first of its kind in England being constructed out of Cotswold Stone with an oak hammer beam roof structure.

Originally the barn was seven bays long but at the end of the 19th century the south end of the barn was destroyed by fire and was eventually cleared away but most of the original structure including the entrance and north end still survives today.

The Tithe Barn is still today a central part of life in the village as the village hall. It is home to a pre school and many other community events and wedding receptions.
