The Ahuriri Estuary is the only sizable east coast estuarine wetland system between the Bay of Plenty and Wellington. This makes it a resource of local, regional and national significance. It has a unique geological history and significant wildlife habitats as well as education and recreation values. Parts of this area are also used for grazing sheep. A drainage control system is part of the management plan of a part of the area.
