Travolta la II° Armata italiana a Caporetto, il 9 novembre del 1917 arrivarono al Piave le armate Austro-Tedesche. L’impatto con la nostra gente, durissimo, vide dei soldati, giunti sfiniti ed affamati da tre anni di trincea, fronteggiare una popolazione relativamente prospera e impreparata. Ne sono testimonianze inoppugnabili i diari dei bravi sacerdoti rimasti accanto ai loro parrocchiani durante l’invasione. Se sia le autorità civili sia molti borghesi erano passati al di là del fiume, per poi essere destinati come profughi in varie regioni d’Italia, i contadini erano rimasti nel proprio podere, accanto a quel bestiame col quale vivevano quasi in simbiosi, legati alle stagioni e ai raccolti.
Ad accogliere la “Isonzo Armee” austriaca, reduce da terribili anni di morte e privazioni, fu un piccolo paradiso; il 1917 era stato infatti un anno di raccolti eccezionali; i granai, i pollai, le stalle e le cantine erano colme e la truppa nemica, con il tacito consenso degli ufficiali, si impadronì, armi alla mano, di ogni bene, spinta anche della volontà di vendetta nei confronti degli italiani, considerati traditori della Triplice Alleanza. L’impero austro-ungarico era ormai privo di scorte di cibo e l’armata di Boroevic poteva contare solo sulla requisizione dei raccolti per gli approvvigionamenti. Questo, insieme agli sprechi, alle ruberie e alle distruzioni, causò un vero e proprio collasso alimentare: il 1918 sarebbe rimasto nella memoria della nostra gente come “l’anno della fame”.

After the 2nd Italian Army in Caporetto, on 9 November 1917 the Austro-German armies arrived at the Piave. The impact with our people, very harsh, saw soldiers, exhausted and hungry for three years of trenches, facing a relatively prosperous and unprepared population. The records of the good priests who remained next to their parishioners during the invasion are indisputable proof. If both the civil authorities and many bourgeois had passed beyond the river, and then destined as refugees in various regions of Italy, the peasants had remained in their farm, next to that livestock with whom they lived almost in symbiosis, linked to the seasons and crops.
To welcome the Austrian "Isonzo Armee", back from terrible years of death and privations, it was a small paradise; in 1917 it had been a year of exceptional crops; the barns, the chicken coops, the stables and the cellars were full and the enemy troops, with the tacit consent of the officers, took possession of every good, arms in hand, also driven by the desire for revenge against the Italians, considered traitors of the Triple Alliance. The Austro-Hungarian Empire was now devoid of food supplies and the Boroevic army could only rely on the requisition of the harvest for supplies. This, together with waste, rubbish and destruction, caused a real food collapse: 1918 would remain in the memory of our people as "the year of hunger".
