Ponad sto lat przed Mary Celeste po wodach Arktyki dryfował inny statek- -widmo – Octavius. Załoga była na okręcie, ale... martwa.
W 1775 r. szkuner wielorybników Herald natrafił w pobliżu Grenlandii na dziwny statek czy raczej półwrak.
Kiedy grupa abordażowa z Heralda weszła na statek, znalazła zamarznięte, doskonale zachowane ciała żeglarzy.
Kapitan wciąż siedział w swej kabinie z piórem w ręku – skonał, dokonując ostatniego wpisu w dzienniku okrętowym.
Ludzie z Heralda byli tak zatrwożeni, że uciekli, zabierając tylko ten dziennik.
Z zapisów wynikało, że Octavius wypłynął z Anglii w roku 1761 i w następnym roku dotarł do Chin. Kapitan jednak, jakby pozbawiony rozumu, postanowił wracać przez lodową Trasę Północną, na północ od Ameryki.
W tamtym czasie kruche drewniane statki nie potrafiły jej pokonać. Octavius utknął w lodach i marynarze zmarli jeden po drugim z zimna i głodu. Pełen trupów statek przedarł się w końcu przez Trasę Północną – dryfował przez 13 lat.
Po spotkaniu z wielorybnikiem zapewne poszedł na dno, gdyż nigdy później go nie widziano.

More than a century before Mary Celeste, another Arctic ship was drifting in the Arctic waters - Octavius. The crew was on the ship, but ... dead.
In 1775, the Herald whaler schooner found a strange ship, or rather a half wreck, near Greenland.
When the boarding group from Herald boarded the ship, they found the frozen, perfectly preserved bodies of the sailors.
The captain was still sitting in his cabin with a pen in his hand - he died, making his last entry in the logbook.
The people of Herald were so appalled that they fled, taking only this diary.
Records showed that Octavius sailed from England in 1761 and reached China the following year. However, the captain, as if deprived of his mind, decided to return via the Ice Route North, north of America.
At that time, fragile wooden ships could not beat her. Octavius got stuck in ice cream and the sailors died one after another from cold and hunger. The ship full of corpses finally broke through the Northern Route - it drifted for 13 years.
After meeting the whaler, she probably sink the bottom, because she was never seen again.
