About St Peter's Church

The church is of 12th century Norman origins and also from several later periods. It is built using locally quarried red sandstone with a simple barn construction. It was restored in 1909 by Sir Charles Nicholson.

St Peter’s houses the only complete set of original bells in the country!

Its peal of six bells, was cast locally in 1673 by the bell founder Richard Keene of Woodstock in Oxfordshire. They are also a Maiden Ring, a peal of bells that sounds the correct notes immediately after casting and needs no further tuning. St Peter’s was one of the first churches in Worcestershire to have as many as six bells and at the beginning of the 18th century very few churches had more than three or four bells. In 1894 the bells were re hung on the original frame and no further major work has been required since.

Wonderful Medieval Wall Paintings

The Medieval Wall Paintings were partially uncovered during the 1909 restoration and are of the greatest interest. The best and earliest paintings are in the Chancel and deserve close inspection. A curtain pattern with Medieval fabulous beasts c1251 by the altar showing fox, stag, hare, wolf and dragons, stalked four leaf flowers are to be seen plus other designs. Full information about all the paintings is available inside the church.

A recumbent alabaster effigy of Sir Hugh Mortimer, Lord of Kyre and Martley can be seen next to the south wall. Dressed in his Yorkist armour, he was killed in battle at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460.

Stunning Contemporary Stained Glass Window

A wonderful stained glass west window was cut, leaded and installed by Patrick Costeloe in 1999 for the painter and stained glass artist Tom Denny.
