Welcome to the Jefferson Street/Gateway to Heritage Project. This 2012 underpass art project celebrates the African American history of Nashville and Jefferson Street in the areas of Athletics, Civil Rights, Education, Music and Religion. It's goal was to re–energize Nashville’s historic Jefferson Street and turn what was once a public eyesore into a pedestrian plaza of community pride and history for both residents and visitors. The 10 bridge columns under the interstate are wrapped with lighted panels that display 80 photographs and narratives about the people and events that have contributed to Jefferson Street’s unique place in history
Street parking is available under the highway overpass along the north side of Jefferson Street.
