If you are interested, here is a little more information on the man behind the sequence.

Liber Abaci posed, and solved, a problem involving the growth of a population of rabbits based on idealized assumptions. The solution, generation by generation, was a sequence of numbers later known as Fibonacci numbers. Although Fibonacci's Liber Abaci contains the earliest known description of the sequence outside of India, the sequence had been noted by Indian mathematicians as early as the sixth century.

In the Fibonacci sequence of numbers, each number is the sum of the previous two numbers. Fibonacci began the sequence not with 0, 1, 1, 2, as modern mathematicians do but with 1,1, 2, etc. He carried the calculation up to the thirteenth place (fourteenth in modern counting), that is 233, though another manuscript carries it to the next place: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377.

NOW - for the catch...

To qualify for this challenge, you need to have logged at least 10 different cache types. Traditional, Unknown, Letterbox Hybrid, Event, Multi-Cache, Cache-In-Trash-Out Event, Earth, Virtual, Mega-Event, Webcam, Wherigo, Location-less,(as of 6/28/18), GPS Adventure Exhibit, Groundspeak HQ, Lost and Found Event(aka Community Celebration), Project-APE, Giga-event, or Groundspeak Block Party.


  1. You must have found this cache, signed its log book, and rehidden it in its hiding location. (Note: this will not require you to do anything that would be considered physically unusual or dangerous for a geocache hunt.)
  2. Your list of Geocaches Found (from geocaches tab on user profile) posted must include at least 10 different types of geocaches. Please include in your log the length of the Fibonacci sequence you were able to complete.
  3. Each type of Geocache Found can only be used once in the sequence. Allowable types that you may use for this challenge are the types listed here on the geocaching website in the list shown.
  4. If you have found this cache and signed the log, you may log a note stating that you've found the cache, regardless of whether you've met the requirements. This allows you to convert your log into a find once you meet the requirements by posting your qualifying find counts as described here.

In order to meet the requirements for the challenge, you'll need to look at your own counts of the different types of geocache finds that you have logged. Then make a list like the one shown, with each line showing a Fibonacci Number, a geocache type, and the number of finds you have of that type at the time of posting. You may not skip a Fibonacci Number in the sequence, and you continue listing as many types as you can so that your number of finds is at least as large as the Fibonacci Number in the sequence. The number of rows you are able to complete is the level you have achieved in the Fibonacci Challenge. To qualify for this challenge, you need to achieve at least 10 rows.
