Geocache Description:

Deck of Cards Series

I do not save the log sheets from this series. If a log sheet is wet or missing, please feel free to replace it. Thanks.

There are a lot of great caches in Galena. Unfortunately there is limited room for more. But we need more caches for our visitors. My answer is to surround Galena with caches. Project GC tracks caches found by owner. I am working on finding 100 caches from each of 20 owners. I think it is only fair that I have 100 caches for them to find. I need about 50 more hides to end up with over 100 active caches. What is a number around 50? 52 - a Deck of Cards!

I will place caches 4 at a time. I will try to add interesting information about each. All the history in Galena is not in town. I hope you enjoy this series.

The Face cards are all located between US Rte 20 and the Mississippi River southeast of Galena. Notice that the roads are hillier near the river. East Galena and Rice Townships are where my German ancestors settled. Actually were from Prussia back before Germany was formed.

The Queens are located along Blackjack Road with one down closer to the river. This was a mining and farming area.  The remnants of the Blackjack mine can be seen on both sides of the road .

The Bautsch mine tailing piles can be clearly seen on the east side of the road. Zink was  mined here after the lead ran out. It closed after a huge cave-in. Half a hillside dropped out of sight. The mine was 300 feet deep and large enough that the mining was done underground with large machines. The tandem dump trucks drove right down the shaft and hauled the ore out.

The  Queen of Spades  is located at the intersection of S Blackjack Road and W Sand Hill Road.

The S turn in Blackjack road just north of this intersection was the railroad bed that went through the Winston Tunnel. The access to the Winston Tunnel caches is a short distance down the hill on the left. The West end of Sand Hill Road is near the river.  The Queen of Clubs is located there. Yes, if you dig in this area you will hit sand just under the surface.
