Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates (they might be in a paddock, or near a gate, or fence, beside a quite busy country road), so don't look there.

Well, most will know what a ‘macʻ might be, and it may be obvious once you get to the cache. The boldest cacher will just look around now, without doing any of the research that follows.

Okay, to help out, we have found this map with some numbers on it. And, that seemed to be two things that cachers are familiar with, so it should be pretty easy to put two and two together to make five.

Yeah, that’s not right - anyway, try to work out the following:

- one Mac clan { & } took up arms against Robert the Bruce.

- a second Mac clan{ % } were ousted by Clan Campbell, and become outlaws for a while.

- and, a third Mac { # } is a sept, centred on the a castle on the Isle of Mull.

Well, that’s three macs and you know there could be many more.

However, even the Scottish scholar will still want to find a postcard map of Scottish tartans, rather than just relying on any special Southland knowledge :-)

This cache can be found at: S 046 degrees 08.2&% minutes E 168 degrees 14.&# minutes

Once you get to the final, hopefully you will appreciate having worked out the puzzle to discover “Which mac?” Although, you may still need to use your canny caching sense to hone in on the container.

Background tartan is the McCartney evening tartan, as registered by Lady Linda McCartney.
