Why is this Mural important?
The 40,000 Years Mural was painted in 1983. Artist Carol Ruff led a team of artists and locals to create a mural that would mark a sense of place and identity for Aboriginal Redfern. On the corner of Lawson and Eveleigh Streets, the Mural marks the importance of Redfern as a living and meeting place for Aboriginal people. It presents the stories, struggles and histories of Aboriginal people, including scenes from Aboriginal life and culture past and present.
Footprints symbolise the journeys Aboriginal people have taken across their land before and after British invasion and colonisation. Throughout the mural are the curves of the Rainbow Serpent, the creator being. It includes portraits of local community members such as Aunty Mona Donnelly and the Redfern All Blacks Rugby League team.
The Mural is a highly significant public artwork, one of the few remaining original community murals from the early 1980's. But after 33 years, the Mural is now in a deteriorated condition and, after community meetings in 2013 and 2015, the decision has been made to restore it.
The present Mural is to be water blasted to remove the original paint and a new design based on the original drawings will be reapplied. The new Mural will be shorter, to accommodate a plaza at the top of Eveleigh St, as part of the Aboriginal Housing Company's Pemulwuy Project.
