Cette cache vous fait (re) découvrir l’un des fleurons de Rouen : l’église Saint-Maclou ! Ce nom, qui fera chanter «…évidemment ! » aux touristes français, est en fait une variation du prénom breton Malo !

Située au beau milieu du très beau quartier historique des Antiquaires, l’église Saint-Maclou date de la 2e moitié du XVe siècle et correspond au style gothique flamboyant, ainsi nommé car les étonnants motifs des sculptures rappellent autant de flammes mouvantes. Sa flèche de 83m, elle, a été construite au XIXe siècles par J-E Barthélémy, qui a donné son nom à la place située devant le portail principal. L’église a beaucoup souffert de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, et a mis 20 ans à être rouverte pour le culte ; à ce jour, elle reste l’objet de nombreux chantiers !
Afin de ne pas restreindre l’accessibilité, la cache porte exclusivement sur des éléments extérieurs de l’église, mais si vous en avez l’occasion, ne manquez pas d’entrer (en respectant bien sûr le recueillement du lieu) afin d’admirer l’intérieur lumineux, l’orgue renaissance et la rosace à l’ouest, un vitrail XVe s. représentant l’arbre de Jessé au nord (le seuil original qui ait survécu)… Si vous en avez l’occasion, revenez la voir illuminée de nuit.
Un peu plus loin dans la rue Martainville, allez aussi faire un tour dans l’un des lieux les plus atypiques de Rouen : l’aître (cimetière) Saint-Maclou, ancien charnier et ossuaire du XIVe s, aménagé pour faire face aux épidémies de peste noire. Ouverture 9-17h, 9-18h en haute saison.

This cache will get you to explore one of the must-see monuments of Rouen : the Church of Saint-Maclou. The name is actually a derivation of Malo, the saint who gave his name to Saint-Malo, the capital of Brittany.
The Church of Saint-Maclou, which stands right in the quaint Antiquarians’ District, dates back to the second half of the 15th c. It was built in a Flamboyant Gothic style --a name referring to the striking flame-like motifs of the stonework. The 83m spire was built in the 19th c. by J-E Barthelemy, after whom the square in front of the main portals was named. The Church was severely damaged during the Second World War and is still the object of regular restoration works.
The cache only bears on external elements of the church so as to keep it available at all times. Still, if you can, do go in (respectfully, a this is an active church) and admire the inside: its Renaissance organ and rose window to the West, the 15th c. stained glass window to the North. The Church is even more impressive at night when it is illuminated.
A bit farther down the Rue de Martainville, you can also visit one of the most unusual places in Rouen : the former ossuary, aître (graveyard) Saint-Maclou. It was built in the 14th c. and stored the remains of the victims of the Black Death (plague). The piles of bones were removed in 1705, yet the macabre décor still offers a vivid reminder of the aître’s past. Opening times are 9am-5pm, 9am-6pm in high season.
