In 1959 werd door de NAM in Slochteren gas ontdekt. De gasbel is drieduizend miljard kubieke meter groot! De op een na grootste toen bekende gasvoorraad ter wereld. Dankzij deze vondst is Nederland gaandeweg helemaal op gas overgegaan.
