In 1885 a guy by the name of Charles Alderton formulated the Friendly Pepper Upper and he introduced it in 1904. It was said that Charles noticed that customers were tiring of the traditional flavors of sarsaparilla (tastes like root beer), lemon and vanilla so he began experimenting with flavors. He settled with the famous 23 flavors.
It is also said that it was originally called a "Waco", the town it was created in, Waco, Texas. However, the name was quickly changed after another man Wade Morrison was given the formula. The name is well known today.
Where the name came from has many stories to choose from:
Some say it was named after a "Charles T. Pepper" who gave Wade his first ever job.
Others say it was named after Charles T. Pepper after he granted Wade permission to marry his daughter
Even others say there was an actual Dr Pepper living real close to Wade one time and they likely knew each other.
A Friendly Pepper Upper that you can enjoy at 10, 2 and 4 that never lets you down.
If you are hungry at 10, thirsty at 2, and tired at 4, drink a pepper upper
So where does the 10, 2, and 4 come from anyway?? Why 10, 2, and 4???
Well during World War II, a syndicated radio program, The 10–2–4 Ranch (later titled 10–2–4 Time), aired in the South and other areas where the Pepper Upper was distributed.
in 2009, a man by the name of Bill Waters supposedly found an old ledger book that supposedly had the original formula for your Friendly Pepper Upper. He said that it was called D Peppers Pepsin Bitters. Now the company that owns your Friendly Pepper Upper said it was not a formula for the drink that he found.
So what is a "bitters" ?
"bitters" is traditionally an alcoholic preparation...so an alcoholic drink.
"Pepsin" is an acidic enzyme and has been said quietly on wikipedia: for use in flavoring foods and beverages
Even though the company says "no", could it be part of the original formula??
Some old time sayings you may remember well or old ones you may have never heard of:
