Teuku Umar (1854 – 1899) is one of national hero of Indonesia. He was a leader of a guerrilla campaign against the Dutch in Aceh during the Aceh War. After Teuku Umar's death, his wife Cut Nyak Dhien (also one of national hero of Indonesia) continued to lead the guerrillas against the Dutch.
In the 1930s, Soekarno described Teuku Umar as being one of the "pahlawan tiga-sekawan" (three heroic friends) along with Diponegoro and Imam Bonjol. The three main roads surrounding Taman Suropati are named by these three heroic friends. Both Teuku Umar and Cut Nyak Dhien profiles have been put in Indonesian Rupiah bank note.
There's a nice fountain in the center of the roundabout near the GZ.
