The United Way Learning Center at this location is named after Mary Maxwell Gates. Mary saw the value of collaboration with tangible impact multiplying when people were united in a common purpose.
This amazing woman was born in Seattle, WA and had a degree in education from the University of Washington. Mary served on the boards of the Seattle Children's Hospital Foundation and the Seattle Syphony. She is honored at this site because she was the first woman to lead the National Board of Directors of the United Way in 1983. She was the mother of three children and one of her famous sons went on to found Microsoft. For a wonderful view, go up the stairs and look out over the tranquil setting.
